Archaeology Day at Cahokia Mounds--Aug 1

Cahokia Mounds Historic Site will be hosting Archeology Day this Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Expert craftpersons will demonstrate ancient crafts including bow & arrow making, flintknapping, potterymaking, fingerweaving, bone-shell-gourd carving, and more. Archaeologists will explain scientific techniques, visitors can wash 1,000 year old artifacts, tour excavations and hear storytelling. Food & drinks will be available.

Live at the Levee--Aug 1

Lupe Fiasco, a Chicago native, has been gaining much-deserved accolades from top-level executives and industry experts since the release of his debut album Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor. Until its release Lupe was relatively unknown in the public eye, but since then he has soared in popularity. His 2007 album The Cool was released to much acclaim and features the hit singles "Paris, Tokyo" and the radio staple "Superstar."

To see Lupe, head to the St. Louis Riverfront, Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard and the grounds of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial under the Gateway Arch (get there early!!). Activities start at 6pm and include live music, fireworks and the AmerenUE/Schnucks K-Town Kids Zone, as well as other activities. The evening concludes with the star-spangled US Bank/Enterprise Rent-A-Car fireworks display at approximately 9:15 pm.

Disney's A Christmas Carol Train Tour--July 31-Aug 2

Head on down to St Louis Union Station for a little Christmas in July (and August)!

Amidst a winter wonderland with holiday décor and Christmas carolers, this free family event offers visitors an exclusive 3D sneak peak of “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” as well as a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the making of the movie with artifacts and character designs housed in real train cars. Radio Disney invites kids to enter for a chance to become a Movie Surfer representing their hometown and get a chance to appear on Disney Channel by filming their very own Movie Surfer’s segment. Guests will also have a chance to win an HP TouchSmart PC and HP Photosmart wireless printer.

Live at the Levee--July 31

The acoustic rock band revered for its humor rolls into St. Louis for an energetic show on July 31. Known for its acoustic guitars and creative percussion, Guster will perform hits like "Satellite", featured in the film Martian Child, "Keep It Together" and "Fa Fa."

Whitaker Music Festival--July 29

Birds singing in the warm, rose-scented evenings signal it’s time for the Whitaker Music Festival. Now in its 15th year, the open-air festival presents ten weeks of free Wednesday evening concerts under the stars. Enjoy the musical talents of many noted St. Louis-area performers and take advantage of the once-a-year opportunity to picnic on the Garden grounds. Click here to view this year's lineup.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic supper, baskets, or coolers. Regal Free Family Film Festival--July 28 and 29

Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Tickets for the 2009 Free Family Film Festival are exclusively available at the theatre box office on the day of the show.

U City Summer Concert Band--July 28

The University City Summer Concert Band hosts free outdoor concerts during the summer. All concerts start at 7pm and last about 60 minutes with a short intermission. You can come and go as you please. The concerts are held in the outdoor Market in the Loop Plaza, next to Racanelli's and across the street from St Louis Bread Co.

Bring a lawn chair, available seating is limited. And bring your children!

For the last piece each concert, the band plays "On the Mall." Children are invited to come up to the front and conduct the band and receive their very own UCity Summer Band pencil!

Even though it is summer, concerts are held in the shade between two buildings. There is no glaring sun and it's a wonderful way to end a hot summer day!

Compton Heights Concert Band--July 26 and 27

The Compton Heights Concert Band of St. Louis presents exciting, old-fashioned Sousa-style band concerts with world-class guest artists. All concerts are free and open to the public and start at 7:30pm.

7/26 and 27 – Geoffrey Gallante, Trumpet!

8 year old Trumpet phenom, Geoffrey Gallante, Headlines the 5th week of Sunday Serenades & Musical Mondays! Geoffrey began playing by age 4! He auditioned for band camp at age 4 and was placed at the highest level ranked with students 10 years older. He continues to develop his talent performing with diverse ensembles such as the Northern Indiana Symphony Orchestra, the Ridgewood NJ Concert Band, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Philadelphia Brass, the Washington Symphonic Brass, the youngest performer ever at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center with a Jazz Band, and even guest TV appearances on the CBS Early Show and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno!

Faust Historical Village Open House--July 25 and 26

Experience St. Louis County as it was a century ago. Tour the 1850s Conway House, home of Dr. Frederick and Lavinia Bates and its period herb garden and outdoor kitchen. Also tour the circa 1848 log cabin of Ludwig and Salome Mertz, a dye and insect repellent garden, German vegetable garden, smokehouse, outhouse and woodshed and the Davis House, which originally was a two story log cabin with it's detached washhouse and smokehouse. On occasion, visitors may see a blacksmith at work in the Yokel barn.

Knowledgeable guides in period dress will be available to answer questions about the structures, as well as the heritage gardens that are lovingly attended to by dedicated volunteers. Nearly every plant was commonly available in the 1800s and served a useful purpose. The homes vary from a modest log cabin and brick cottage built by German immigrants to larger and more sophisticated 2-story homes, built by established, wealthy landowners. They are partially furnished appropriate to the period.

"Redneck Woman" Gretchen Wilson returns to her roots (she’s from Pocahontas, Illinois) for a foot-stomping show. The two-time Grammy nominee (for "I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today") will bring the crowd to its feet with her distinctive vocals and high-energy show.

City-Wide Open Studios--July 25 and 26

More than 100 artists are inviting the public to view the spaces where they work through the 4th Annual City-Wide Open Studios sponsored by the Contemporary Art Museum. Guests are invited to tour the various spaces all weekend and find out what kind of creative invention happens behind closed doors.

Visitors will have the option of participating in group bike routes beginning at 10:00 a.m. or riding on an individual basis. Trolley tours will also be available.

This event spans the areas of St. Louis City, University City and Maplewood and will last from 10am to 4pm.

Free Eye Screening--July 25 and 26

The St Louis Science Center will be hosting free vision screenings on July 25 and 26 in the St Louis Science Center Meeting Rooms AB.

The vision-screening program, sponsored by the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation, offers a preliminary screening that can locate amblyopia, or "lazy eye", and detect glaucoma, as well as other vision problems that can lead to amblyopia and glaucoma if not corrected. The free screening for amblyopia is offered to children between 6 months and 6 years of age and the screening for glaucoma is offered to anyone over the age of 60.

Art After 5--July 24

This Friday, July 24, the St Louis Art Museum will feature Lamar Harris & the L in Grigg Gallery or on the Museum Grounds (weather permitting) in a free concert from 7:00–8:30 pm.

St. Louis-based jazz, soul, and R&B trombonist Lamar Harris has shared the stage with a variety of musical stars, including George Benson, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Common, Earth Wind & Fire, and Dr. John. In his performances, Harris creates an eclectic blend of horns, electric sounds, and vocals. He has released three albums to date, including the 2008 title Groove Therapy.

Henry Shaw's 209th Birthday Celebration--July 24

The Missouri Botanical Garden presents a celebration of the 209th birthday of the founder of the Garden, Henry Shaw. Admission is FREE for all guests from 9am-5pm!

Kids enjoy entertainment such as face painters and balloon sculptors while creating their own special pieces of art at the Imagination Station. This event is more than entertainment; it’s about connecting our community. Last year the series drew more than 3,000 attendees from 70 different zip codes across the area introducing the entire region to the growth and revival of North St. Louis.

St. Louis Flamenco guitarist and music director for Los Flamencos, Lliam Christy joins world traveled accomplished classical guitarist Jon Knight for a new project blending a mix of South and Central American music (many countries), Afro Cuban, Classical, Jazz, and Flamenco.

While this event is free, it is being held at The Shaved Duck (2900 Virginia Ave.) and I don't know if there is any expectation for food or drink purchase. If you attend, please leave a comment and let us know for future events held there!

Baseball Boulevard--July 14

Come party with BARcelona , Chipotle, John P. Fields, Kilkenny’s, Il Vicino, Mazara, Pomme, Portabella, and Roxanne on Baseball Boulevard in the Heart of Clayton.

The city will be closing down North Central Avenue , between Maryland and Forsyth, to make room for Baseball Boulevard. Baseball Boulevard will feature a DJ spinning music from 4-7 p.m. , and at 7:00 p.m. stick around to watch the 2009 MLB All Star Game on the outdoor screen. During the game they will be giving away gift packs featuring the best of Clayton businesses.

Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Tickets for the 2009 Free Family Film Festival are exclusively available at the theatre box office on the day of the show.

U City Summer Concert Band--July 14

The University City Summer Concert Band hosts free outdoor concerts during the summer. All concerts start at 7pm and last about 60 minutes with a short intermission. You can come and go as you please. The concerts are held in the outdoor Market in the Loop Plaza, next to Racanelli's and across the street from St Louis Bread Co.

Bring a lawn chair, available seating is limited. And bring your children!

For the last piece each concert, the band plays "On the Mall." Children are invited to come up to the front and conduct the band and receive their very own UCity Summer Band pencil!

Even though it is summer, concerts are held in the shade between two buildings. There is no glaring sun and it's a wonderful way to end a hot summer day!

Compton Heights Concert Band--July 12 and 13

The Compton Heights Concert Band of St. Louis presents exciting, old-fashioned Sousa-style band concerts with world-class guest artists. All concerts are free and open to the public and start at 7:30pm.

7/12 and 13 – David Morris, World Champion Whistler

In 2003 David Morris achieved the top whistling award and became the "International Grand Champion" in the 30th Annual World Whistling Championships in Louisburg, North Carolina! He has whistled his way onto our stage this summer and will delight the audience in some amazing whistling feats with incredible musicianship and lyrical phrasing. You'll be whistling home after the concerts!

Whitaker Music Festival--July 8

Birds singing in the warm, rose-scented evenings signal it’s time for the Whitaker Music Festival. Now in its 15th year, the open-air festival presents ten weeks of free Wednesday evening concerts under the stars. Enjoy the musical talents of many noted St. Louis-area performers and take advantage of the once-a-year opportunity to picnic on the Garden grounds. Click here to view this year's lineup.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic supper, baskets, or coolers. Picnic fare is also available for purchase on site, including brisket sandwiches, hot dogs, cheese and grape plates, sno-cones, chips, cookies, beer, wine, and soda. The Doris I. Children's Concert Series--July 8

Wednesday mornings during the summer the Piper Palm House hosts children's concerts at 9:30 AM. All concerts are free and open to the public and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more info call 314-771-4424.

The Piper Palm House is located on the north side of Tower Grove Park, close to the park entrance at Magnolia and Tower Grove Avenue.
