Children's Concert Series--July 1

Wednesday mornings during the summer the Piper Palm House hosts children's concerts at 9:30 AM. All concerts are free and open to the public and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more info call 314-771-4424.

The Piper Palm House is located on the north side of Tower Grove Park, close to the park entrance at Magnolia and Tower Grove Avenue.

Wehrenberg Theatres are once again hosting their FREE summer movie series. There are numerous theatres throughout the St. Louis area participating and the movies vary from week to week depending on the theatre. For more information, see their website here:

Whitaker Music Festival--July 1

Birds singing in the warm, rose-scented evenings signal it’s time for the Whitaker Music Festival. Now in its 15th year, the open-air festival presents ten weeks of free Wednesday evening concerts under the stars. Enjoy the musical talents of many noted St. Louis-area performers and take advantage of the once-a-year opportunity to picnic on the Garden grounds. Click here to view this year's lineup.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic supper, baskets, or coolers. Picnic fare is also available for purchase on site, including brisket sandwiches, hot dogs, cheese and grape plates, sno-cones, chips, cookies, beer, wine, and soda. The Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden also remains open late until 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, with free admission after 5 p.m.The festival is funded by the Whitaker Foundation, which supports St. Louis arts and parks to promote common heritage, celebrate diversity, and encourage vitality within the community.In case of rain, check the Garden’s website at www.mobot.org or tune in to radio station WSIE, 88.7 FM, for cancellation information.

Dizzy Atmosphere
This St. Louis band embodies the whirling, incessant rhythms of the American Swing era. Appearing at our festival for the first time, they combine European and American jazz idioms with a hint of breathless gypsy bravado. The result is an evening of irresistable toe-tapping!

Regal Free Family Film Festival--June 30 and July 1

Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Tickets for the 2009 Free Family Film Festival are exclusively available at the theatre box office on the day of the show.

The only St Louis area theatre participating in the Free Family Film Festival is the one at the St Louis Mills Stadium 18 (5555 St. Louis Mills Blvd., Hazelwood, MO 63042).

U City Summer Concert Band--June 30

The University City Summer Concert Band hosts free outdoor concerts during the summer. All concerts start at 7pm and last about 60 minutes with a short intermission. You can come and go as you please. The concerts are held in the outdoor Market in the Loop Plaza, next to Racanelli's and across the street from St Louis Bread Co.

Bring a lawn chair, available seating is limited. And bring your children!

For the last piece each concert, the band plays "On the Mall." Children are invited to come up to the front and conduct the band and receive their very own UCity Summer Band pencil!

Even though it is summer, concerts are held in the shade between two buildings. There is no glaring sun and it's a wonderful way to end a hot summer day!

Family Sunday at the St Louis Art Museum--June 28

Come check out St Louis Art Museum's free Family Sunday with an exploration of texture!

Touchy Texture
Sculpture Hall
1:00–4:00 pm

Rough and smooth, bumpy and scratchy—there's texture aplenty in and around the Museum. This month, go on a tour of the galleries to "feel" texture with your eyes instead of your hands. Then, make your own texture collage or textural tiles to take home with you.

The Sound of Texture
What does bumpy sound like? How about scratchy? Smooth? St. Louis sound artist and Family Programs favorite Eric Hall visits the Museum for hands-on and ears-on experiments in hearing what your fingers feel.

Compton Heights Concert Band--June 28 and 29

The Compton Heights Concert Band of St. Louis presents exciting, old-fashioned Sousa-style band concerts with world-class guest artists. All concerts are free and open to the public and start at 7:30pm.

Sunday concerts are performed at Francis Park (for more info, call 776-2227). Monday concerts are performed at the Music Stand in Tower Grove Park (for more info, call 771-2679).

Music+Movies at Laumeier Park--June 26

Music+Movies features a local band followed by an outdoor movie on four Fridays in June. The series is free, and picnic baskets and lawn chairs are encouraged. Concessions and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Coolers permitted, no glass please. No pets allowed for special events. In case of inclement weather, Music+Movies will be held the following night.

June 26 will feature Bored of Education at 7pm followed by The Sandlot at 8:30pm.

Music+Movies is held at Laumeier Outdoor Music Amphitheatre. LOMA is Laumeier's outdoor event venue for a series of entertainment events throughout the year. An interesting mix of entertainment, food and beverages and the relaxed atmosphere of an open-air amphitheatre amid large-scale sculptures make this a venue for not-to-be-missed events!

Art After 5--June 26

The Saint Louis Art Museum hosts Art After 5 on Friday evenings at 7pm. These free concerts are held on Art Hill Plaza (weather permitting).

This Friday, June 26, features Swing Deville. Blending stringed instruments and a myriad of musical styles, this ensemble creates a unique musical sound that is just right for a relaxing summer evening. Swing DeVille's musical inspiration comes from early western swing as well as big band, gypsy jazz, New Orleans jazz, and pop music of the 1920s, '30, and '40s. The musicians of Swing DeVille play rare vintage acoustic instruments that include the violin, mandolin, guitar, and bass.

Jungle Boogie at the St Louis Zoo--June 26

"Splish splash" with the stingrays, "cha-cha" with the cheetahs, "salsa" with the sea lions or "two-step" with the tigers at Jungle Boogie, the Zoo's FREE Friday Night concert series for the whole family. This Friday night will be the jazz/blues music of J Rob.

Music+Movies at Laumeier Park--June 19

Music+Movies features a local band followed by an outdoor movie on four Fridays in June. The series is free, and picnic baskets and lawn chairs are encouraged. Jungle Boogie at the St Louis Zoo--June 12

"Splish splash" with the stingrays, "cha-cha" with the cheetahs, "salsa" with the sea lions or "two-step" with the tigers at Jungle Boogie, the Zoo's FREE Friday Night concert series for the whole family. This Friday night will be the country/pop duo John Henry & Rob Boyle of Spur.
